Chemical properties
Colorless, tasteless, odorless, inert gas at room temperature.
Danger
Neon gas at high concentrations can reduce the oxygen partial pressure in the air and cause suffocation. Symptoms include rapid breathing, lack of concentration, and ataxia; followed by fatigue, irritability, nausea, vomiting, coma, convulsions, and even death. Special protection is generally not required during production. However, when the oxygen concentration in the workplace is lower than 18%, an air respirator, oxygen respirator or long-tube mask must be worn.
Uses
1. Neon is also used to make high-voltage indicators and switchgear, lightning arresters, diving equipment and lasers. Liquid neon is an important low-temperature refrigerant. Its unit volume cooling capacity is more than 40 times that of liquid helium and more than 3 times that of liquid hydrogen. It is also used in high-energy physics research, allowing neon to fill the spark chamber to detect and the behavior of particles.
2. Used to fill neon tubes and bulbs, and can also fill mercury lamps and sodium vapor lamps, and is also used as a coolant
3. Mainly used in neon lamps and as a filling medium in the electronics industry (such as high-voltage neon lamps, counter tubes, etc.), and also used in laser technology. Liquid neon can be used as a low-temperature cold source between 26 and 40K due to its advantages such as low boiling point. It is also used in high-energy physics. For example, a bubble chamber using liquid neon. Neon-oxygen mixture can also be used for breathing instead of helium-oxygen.
Production method
The air separation method uses the condensation method to extract the crude helium and neon mixed gas from the air separation unit. After removing hydrogen and nitrogen from the crude helium and neon mixed gas, a pure neon-helium mixed gas with a purity of more than 99.95% is obtained. After separation and purification, 99.99% high-purity neon can be obtained.
