Molecular structure
Oxygen is composed of oxygen molecules (O2). Each oxygen molecule is composed of 2 oxygen atoms. Oxygen is a diatomic molecule. Two oxygen atoms form a covalent bond, one 2p orbital forms a σ bond, and the other two 2p orbitals form a π bond. Its molecular orbital formula is (σ1s)2(σ1s*)2(σ2s)2(σ2s*)2(σ2p)2(π2p)4(π2p*)2, so oxygen is an odd electron molecule and has paramagnetism.
Chemical properties
Uses
1. Used for metal cutting and welding, steelmaking, and for medical, defense, electronics, chemical, metallurgical and other industries
2. Used for optical fiber preparation, electric vacuum research, and can also be used for semiconductor device preparation, thermal oxidation, epitaxial diffusion, chemical vapor deposition, etc.
3. Oxygen can be used for metal welding and cutting. Mixed with acetylene, it can obtain extremely high flame temperatures to melt metals, and is widely used in smelting and top-blown oxygen steelmaking. Mixed with water vapor, it can be used to replace air and blown into the gasification furnace to obtain coal gas with higher calorific value. It is used in medical oxidation therapy to treat pneumonia, gas poisoning, etc. The chemical industry is used to enhance the production of nitric acid and sulfuric acid. Liquid oxygen can be used as liquid oxygen explosives and rocket propellant fuel.
4. The use of oxygen includes steel smelting, the manufacture of plastics and textiles, as rocket propellants and oxygen therapy, and is also used to maintain life in aircraft, submarines, spacecraft, diving and fires.
Colorless, transparent, odorless, tasteless gas. Not easily soluble in water, slightly soluble in alcohol.
Production method
Air separation method: First, the air is cleaned of dust and mechanical impurities and then compressed in a compressor. Carbon dioxide is removed from the compressed air. The compressed air is dried, liquefied, distilled, and separated into oxygen and nitrogen. The oxygen is stored in an oxygen cabinet, the liquid oxygen is sent to a storage tank, and the compressed oxygen is filled in an oxygen cylinder. Water electrolysis method: Direct current is passed through the electrolytic cell, and the water is decomposed into oxygen and hydrogen. This method can produce pure hydrogen and produce oxygen as a by-product.
